365 Ways to Start Over: Day #32 – You Will Go as Far as the Five People You Are Closest to

You will go as far as the five people you are closest to. It’s true. Think of the five people you spend the most time with. Are they not in about the same position in life as you? Same type of friends? Same type of neighborhood. Same socioeconomic group? Same values? Same interests?

There is nothing wrong with this if you are comfortable with where you are in life. If you want to experience something differently, do something differently. That doesn’t mean dump all of your good friends. It does mean start spending time not just with people who WANT to change, but with people who ARE where you want to be. Often people in transition lean on each other which is a great source of support that should be nurtured. However, you need to also reach out of that comfort zone if you want to live out of that comfort zone.

If you seek a richer career, spend time with people who are in one. If you seek closer friends, spend time with people who are good friends to others and to whom you will be a good friend. If you are single and prefer to be married, spend time with people who are in good marriages and observe how they approach compromise and how they listen. If you want to lose weight, spend time with people who are health conscious.

If you only spend time with and listen to people who are thinking and seeking the same thing as you, you will continue to think the same things you’ve been repeating to them ie: “If I could just stay on this diet I’d be thinner.” “If companies were only hiring, I’d get a job.” “There aren’t any good men left.”

Remember, you are what you attract. If you complain about how rotten things are, things will be rotten. If you use affirming statements in the first person such as, “I am thin.” (Not, “I will be thin.”) “I have a great job.” “I have found the love of my life.” you will start to find that which fulfills you!

Branch out of your comfort zone and create new relationships with those who you admire. It is certainly harder to do this than it is to continue to simply be with your old friends doing the same things you’ve always done. If you take the risk and explore new friendships you will be energized by the experience and inspired to try new things. It is incredibly reinforcing to continue to see examples of people who have accomplished that which you seek. So bring those people into your inner circle and be a trusting friend to them. They will in turn value your friendships and serve as a great source of support. My mother always said, “Make new friends and keep the old, one is silver and the other gold.” Start now!

how do I make a career change, keeping a positive attitude when changing careers, Mary Lee Gannon, Pittsburgh, startig over now, starting over, transferable skills

365 Ways to Start Over: Day #31 – Reboot Your Transferable Skills

Everyone who has ever wanted to make a change has felt the pains associated with taking risk. If the change is in your career, you face a pointed dilemma. You want to change careers but:

1) You keep telling yourself you are not qualified for another career.
2) The career skills listed on your resume do not demonstrate that you are qualified for a position you seek.

Reboot What’s In Your Head: The first thing to do is defray the “head trash” that keeps telling you, “I don’t have the skills to do that job!”

In the words of Henry Ford remember, “If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right.” If you listen to the head trash you will not have the:

Confidence to apply for “stretch” jobs
Empowerment to acquire and hone new skills
Focus to consider new opportunities for networking and jobs

So what do you do with the head trash that keeps telling you that you don’t have the skills to try something new?

Define your transferable skills that may be applied to any job.
Practice how to describe them in an interview or networking situation.
Assure the voice in your head, which is trying to protect you from failure, that you have the right skills as defined above to be an asset to any organization!

Reboot Your Resume: Tailor every resume, cover letter and application to the requirements of the job.

Dates of Employment: Include dates of promotions and unscheduled raises
Responsibilities: Include key accomplishments that apply to new job
Software and other skills: Include how transferable skills helped accomplish the company’s mission

“Transferable skills” Are Employability Skills – the skills that you have that can be applied in another setting. Your resume should feature “transferable skills” and “measurable accomplishments” utilizing those skills. Example: Built a department of 15 direct reports and within six months was able to increase sales 11%.

If your skills and knowledge are valuable to only one employer, you are in trouble. Sooner or later your employer will no longer be interested in buying those skills or can get someone new to do them for less, and you will have no place else to put them to use.

Transferable Skills Fall into Three Categories:

1. Communication
2. Organization of People and Information
3. Operation/Fixing of Systems and Equipment

Examples of Communication Transferable Skills:

Speaking effectively,
Writing concisely
Selling
Building consensus
Facilitating group discussion
Negotiating
Perceiving nonverbal messages
Reporting information
Interviewing
Editing
Inspiring and motivating people to act
Developing rapport
Listening
Providing support for others
Delegating with respect
Train others
Managing conflict
Delegate responsibility
Evaluate Your Own Work and that of others
Handle complaints
Networking

Examples of Organization of People and Information Transferable Skills:

Forecasting and predicting
Creating ideas
Identifying problems
Creating solutions
Analyzing alternatives
Identifying resources
Creating plans
Defining process
Setting goals
Defining needs
Developing evaluation strategies
Attend to detail
Make sound decisions
Coach
Manage change
Attend to visual and auditory detail
Keep records
Research
Can meet deadlines
Crisis management
Time Management
Ability to think and act independently
Create and implement strategy
Independent learning

Examples of Operation/Fixing of Systems and Equipment Transferable Skills:

Install software
Engineer systems
Coordinate equipment interfaces
Manage a sound system
Manage lighting system
Manage facilities operations – HVAC, utilities, etc.
Build things
Install appliances
Interface technology
Compare systems
Commercial and residential real estate construction
Repair equipment/machinery/appliances/technology

After you make a list of your transferable skill, make a note as to what measurable accomplishment you achieved when you applied that skill. Example: Managed eight direct reports and increased productivity 5% in the first quarter.

Read the prospective job description for every job you seek and tailor your resume and cover letter for each position. Identify your transferable skills and highlight them in a custom resume for each position you seek. Write a Professional Summary that tells which transferable skills are applicable to the position you are seeking. Identify not only the transferable skills but also the measurable accomplishments you achieved when you applied those skills. Network with individuals in the line of work you seek and in prospective companies.

When people ask, “What do you do?” don’t say, “I’m looking to change jobs” or “I am unemployed right now.” You might say, “I’m seeking my next opportunity to apply my ________________(transferable skills) to help a company _______________ (key accomplishment) like I did in my last position.” Or “I’m looking to apply my sales skills to help a company increase sales 15% or greater as I did in my last position.”

Having a “can-do” attitude, knowing your transferable kills and being able to describe them is the first step to making a career change. Start now!

365 Ways to Start Over: Day #30 – Seven Questions to “Reboot Your Life”

Find a few quiet moments and sit down with a fresh piece of paper and a pencil. The answers you are about to generate are so revealing you won’t want to scribble them on scrap paper or pencil them in between other notes you are taking. Make sure there are no distractions around you visual or auditory – just pleasant inspirational things to look at or listen to. The answers to these questions may have many parts so have extra paper near by.

Reboot Your Life Questions:

1. Now what is the one wildly out of reach aspiration you would do if you knew you could not fail?

2. What do you keep telling yourself is the reason you can’t do that?

3. What are you doing instead?

4. What has this mindset and the behaviors associated with it cost you?

5. How would the results be different if you reached your aspiration?

6. What would you be doing differently in this fulfilled state?

7. When you are in this totally rewarded and satisfied place where everything in your life is in unison and energy flows effortlessly through you as you live your life purpose every day – what empowering thought is going through your mind?

The secret to Rebooting Your Life” is simple. Replace #2 with #7. Here’s how you are going to do that.

Reboot Your Life Plan:

1. Write the statement from #7 in bright colorful letters on index cards or paper (I call these – Reboot Reminders) and tape them everywhere you spend time: the rim of your computer screen, bathroom mirror, refrigerator, dresser mirror, desk, in your car.

2. When the limiting head trash of #2 comes flooding back into your mind, erase it and replace it with #7. Go to tone of the Reboot Reminders that you posted and write down something differently you have done to reboot your head trash toward life purpose and date it. These dates and notes will remind you that you CAN make change – sustainable change. You already have! Start now!
