365 Ways to Start Over: Day#5 – Wonder Like a Three-Year-Old
Three-year-olds are the most successful people on the planet. They toddle around with angelic little faces approaching everything with complete inhibition. They empty an entire box of Cherrio’s on a table just to eat a few. They climb onto anything that has a plateau. They drop gorgeous crystal on the floor with the same disregard as a dog toy. Nobody expects anything more from them because they aren’t old enough to reason for the sake of safety or proper decorum. And everybody thinks they’re adorable. What a life! No matter what you do it is cute or someone else’s fault.
Explore like a three-year-old. Wonder like a three-year-old. Laugh like a three-year-old. Post an affirming note on your desk or mirror that says “I am in awe like a three-year-old.” If you find yourself being too cautious, speculative, careful or fearful of risk you are aging to the five and six-year-old level where in school you were taught to know better, be careful, and keep yourself in check. This is not to say throw caution to the wind and start leaping off cliffs with a cape tied to your shoulders. Just remember that if you fail, look bad, or get hurt, there is another box of cereal in the cupboard, another pair of steps to climb and that there are far more uses for a dog toy in this world than there are for brilliantly cut crystal. What would you attempt to do if you knew you could not fail?
Mary Lee Gannon is the president of Gannon Group – a full service executive coaching, training and consulting firm that provides productivity strategies for people and organizations by improving team performance, executive leadership skills, board performance, planning and project execution. Mary Lee’s personal turnaround came as a stay-at-home mother, with four children under seven-years-old, who endured a divorce that took she and the children from the country club life to public assistance from where within a short time she worked out of that to the level of CEO. Her book “Starting Over – 25 Rules for When You’ve Bottomed Out” is available in bookstores or at Amazon.
